Arts at Burke
Because art and self-expression are integral parts of you, they’re integral parts of Burke.
Visual Arts
Studies show that students perform better in an environment that displays their work and the work of their peers. Walk through our halls and you’ll see paintings, posters, and ceramic pieces shining on our walls. Excellent teachers help students find and employ their artistic voice. Students see the value in our visual arts program and enjoy it so much that many of them decide to take four years of art in high school. Every year, a Burke student is accepted into the competitive Museum Makers program at the National Gallery of Art to learn how art historians curate museum collections.
Music
While our students gain a strong footing in musical knowledge, they also experience what being a musician is really about: creativity, self-expression, and of course, fun. Joining a band at Burke is unlike bands at other schools. Our bands rock out. They play regularly at schoolwide assemblies. And at the end-of-year showcase, everyone performs a set of four or five songs. Except for our seniors—they can jam as long as they want.
Art is everywhere at Burke—from halls and stairwells to classrooms and studios to the Bengal mural outside.
Theater
Burke students perform shows connected to relevant contemporary issues, and they weigh in on the selection of each year’s scripts. When you find yourself on stage at Burke, know you are surrounded by talented and enthusiastic performers. Burke put on an award-winning performance at the Folger Theater Secondary School Shakespeare Festival.
