Preparing for What Comes Next

Student-Centered Approach

First and foremost, we’re a school that prepares students for the rigors of college academics. To accomplish that goal, we follow a progressive pedagogy that places you at the center of your learning. Because we believe it’s the best method for educating each child. Burke’s academic environment allows you to lead important discussions and share your opinions. We bring together students from all over greater D.C., who contribute their unique experiences, enriching everyone’s learning.

Critical Thinking

Learning is about much more than memorizing material. Burke teaches you to interpret the world around you, adopt different viewpoints, and challenge perspectives. Change happens quickly in the 21st century; our educational philosophy ensures you can think, analyze, and solve problems in any setting.

“Burke is progressive, meaning we are always keeping up with trends and innovations. But we’re also progressive in the sense that students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being are at the center of everything we do. They deserve and receive our full attention.”

Inquiry

At the end of the year, Earth Science students pose and solve an original question based on science topics they find intriguing, such as the decline of the Eastern Pacific’s leatherback sea turtle population or the effect of climate change on Chicago mosquitoes. To complete the project, students must write an academic journal, create a digital poster, and present their findings.

Ingenuity

Students design and build prototypes of “tiny houses” to fit specified size and budget constraints and sustainability requirements. In completing their projects, students apply math, science, and economics principles to a real-world scenario.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Students in grade seven create their own iBook about an African country of their choice. The project involves topics in world geography, endangered species in life sciences, short stories, and math infographics.

Inside and Out

Learning at Burke happens outside our campus as much as inside. French students visit the Haitian embassy; eighth-graders welcome guest speakers from the International Rescue Committee; and science classes examine flora and fauna in Rock Creek Park.
